Bio diversity - harmony with nature
The project is well under way. We planted an orchard of organically grown apple, cherry, damson and plum trees. We have planted a native woodland with some interesting wild fruit trees including medlar, cherry, quince and crab apple. We have also planted some windbreak trees and a feature liquid amber. See below for photographs of our friends and neighbours helping.
We have begun a forest garden. We also have two hives ready for natural beekeeping.
We hope our native woodland is in tune with nature and community by planting hazel to create hurdles as well as purple willow for basket making.
Some wood will harvested as firewood. Other, slower growing wood, would be a long term investment, realised at a much later date. There is goat and purple willow, oak, ash, mountain ash, sweet chestnut, hornbeam, small leafed lime, wayfaring tree, and for shrubs along the edge, dogwood, spindle, blackthorn, snowberry, gelder rose, wild privet and dogwood. We have also planted four walnuts and lots of sweet chestnuts.
Here we are planting the orchard.
Wildflower meadow
Our neighbours, the Meyers, have kindly paid for two large bags of wonderful wildflower seeds. Species include fescue, birdsfoot trefoil, field scabious, buttercup, red campion, sorrel, oxeye daisy, cornflower, poppy and many more.
